Yugoslavian Epilogue
The majority of this expedition has now finished. I've learnt a lot about the central and western Balkan States, their culture and the former Yugoslavia. Before returning to rest for a period I wanted to visit some friends I'd met on the Camino and in Granada. There are a few more weeks to go and after I'll have some much needed R&R. To most, it looks like a wonderful holiday away from the day-to-day stresses of life, but I can assure you it has not been easy. Every day I make new decisions without the security of knowing if they will be fulfilled. "Where will I sleep? How can I reach this city? How much money is left?" I make the same decisions over and over in a new environment where the language changes and infrastructure differs.
Taking in the sights, sounds and smells, meeting new people and in some cases assessing the risk - your mind tires over time.
Was it all worth it? Of course. It was an absolute privilege and I will continue again shortly. I have learned how kind people can be and have been welcomed into their homes where they wish to share with me everything they have, even if they have nothing.
As you may know it's difficult to write this in real time and I am actually back out again in my 20th month - I'm writing this entry from a sleeper-train in the depths of Ukraine.
Soon I'll bring you the highlights of my time in the UK and also some additional pictures of this trip that I couldn't show you the first time around.
There are bigger plans in development which in summer I hope to be able to share with you; something I've been working on for around eight months now and soon it'll be time to get it out there. So until then, please enjoy the last of this leg.
