I had been waiting a long time for this day. I kept it secret from Louise and had only mentioned that there was one reason that I wanted to visit Zadar. Walking parallel to the old town along the peninsula we began to hear the ethereal sound in the distance. The sea was calm and the wind low, not masking the sound rolling towards us. Nothing could stop my beaming smile as my anticipation grew. I asked Louise what she thought it was and her first guess was steel drums. She soon realised it was in time with the waves and that it was the ocean creating the melody. On the tip of the peninsular is the Zadar Sea Organ, a system of pipes under the marble sea wall which create entrancing notes by the movement of the waves.
I could lay next to the organ for hours listening to its metallic sounds. The tide is random in nature but my mind tries to pick out periodic cycles with the swash; each verse was unique.
For the evening’s entertainment we joined new friends in the hostel. We were privileged to meet Ella from Perth. A stellar individual whose company I thoroughly enjoyed. Ella told me about the upcoming Fête des Lumières in Lyon; I had plans to see friends in northern Italy around this time and Lyon wasn't exactly a stretch.
This was my final day with Louise. Louise, I thank you so much for coming. It was a marvellous week which I'll always remember, especially the constant singing of Lady Leisure's Queen’s Speech 4.
