After the previous day’s events and being rained-off for the afternoon, I thought it best to rest and catch up on a little writing.  It's surprisingly easy to fall behind on keeping a journal, I had around 3-4 weeks to catch up on.

The beach town of Sarandë is located opposite the Greek island of Corfu; you can just about see it on the left in this picture.  Sarandë has the same climate and similar surroundings as Corfu but at a much lower cost, so if you're considering the Greek island, why not hop across on the ferry?  You can take a cheap flight to Corfu as your gateway to Albania!

The town is small and has beautiful pockets of coastline along with historical sites. Nearby is the historical city of Gjirokaster, a well preserved Ottoman city listed under UNESCO. To the east is the 8th century BC settlement of Butrint, the home of some very impressive Roman archaeological ruins. I was planning on seeing these in the coming days. Albania has an incredible amount of history from many cultures and it is all accessible; many of the sites I have visited did not have any ropes or barriers preventing you from walking among what remains.
