I walked the Camino for my own reasons but wanted to experience the Pilgrim mass and see the ‘Botafumeiro’, the giant thurible in Santiago de Compostela cathedral. The ritual has been taking place since the 12th century where a 53kg silver-plated brass Botafumeiro operated by 8 people swings through the cathedral reaching up to 68km/hr. It is suspended 65m from the ceiling and diffuses incense. You wouldn't want to stand in front of it! Outside of the Pilgrims mass the ritual takes place 12 times a year.
