Day 397 Rijeka - Pula
I was pleasantly surprised at Eleonora and Elisa's enthusiasm for joining me to see a little of the northern Adriatic.
Pula is a beautiful city and is heavily influenced in parts by Italian architecture. The large amphitheatre is very impressive, as is the giant anchor that can be found in a nearby street.
Walking through the city we found the ruins near Rimsko Kazaliste. There is a large wartime network of underground tunnels which I was keen to explore. The various entrances were locked, all except one hidden in the hill where you had to squeeze through a 50cm gap and slide down into the tunnel below. I systematically checked each tunnel and room, often doubling back to make sure I knew where the entrance was as to not get turned around and lose my way. There was nothing out of the ordinary except for the complete skeleton of what appeared to be a young primate. Animals like this tend not to live in Croatia and so I'm really not sure what it was. The tunnels form a network across the city and later the three of us entered a new section. It was Eleanora and Elisa's first time exploring such things. The roots of flora above had pierced through the ceiling - it doesn't scream structurally sound.
